About

An independent organization that studies how technology behaves in practical use.

We exist to answer one question honestly: what does this technology do, and how does it impact those using it?

Technology Research Group conducts applied technology research, field evaluation, technology education, and technical analysis, with particular depth in communications, networking, positioning, sensing, and the power and data systems behind them. Our work is practical rather than theoretical — we are interested in how a device or system performs once it leaves the datasheet and meets the conditions of actual use.

We work with public-sector and private-sector organizations, and with vendors seeking independent validation of their own products. The common thread is a need for an answer that is grounded in evidence rather than in marketing, and that is reported plainly, including where the news is unwelcome.

We are deliberately modest in scale and in public profile. We do not publish a client list, we do not trade on logos, and we let the method and the findings speak for the organization. What we are willing to be judged on is the quality and honesty of the work — which is why the foundations we reason from and the standards we hold to are published in full.

Anyone training or working with us is expected to have read the foundations first. They are written to be understood without specialist background, and they are the shared language of everything we do.

On independence

When we call ourselves independent, we mean something specific and checkable: we hold no manufacturer or vendor relationships, we earn nothing from the sale of the technology we evaluate, and no commercial arrangement makes one finding more profitable than another. A vendor may commission an evaluation of their own product; they cannot commission its conclusion.

Independence of this kind is a claim like any other, and we think it should be the first thing a careful reader tests. Our answer is to make the evidence, not the relationship, decide the finding — and to write that evidence down so the finding can be checked by someone who trusts neither us nor the manufacturer. That is the whole of our case, and we would rather be examined on it than asked to be taken on trust.

Independent in perspective. Rigorous in practice.

If you have a claim to test, a technology to evaluate, or a decision that turns on how something actually performs, we are glad to hear from you.
